Program Director

Dr. Peng Xu is an Assistant Professor of Chinese.  She was born and grew up in China.  Before she earned her Ph.D. degree at the University of Chicago, she completed B.A. and M.A in Chinese literature at Peking University (Beijing).

Program Description

The goal of the Intensive Mandarin in Nanjing program is to immerse students in the Chinese language. Excursions to sites in Nanjing led by the faculty director explore the cultural heritages the city has to offer–glittering 10th-century temples, traditional gardens and modern monuments.  The various cultural activities offered by the Division of Humanities of the Southeast University will further bring rich cultural dimensions to the program.

Students will take intensive Chinese languages for four weeks and earn six credits in Chinese language at the 200 or 300 level. They will also participate in excursions around Nanjing as well as a longer tour at the end of the program to Beijing.

In the 21st century, China and the US will continue to be two extremely important players in the global political, economic, and international system.  This program provides students with an opportunity for language immersion, cultural exploration, an examination of Chinese history, exciting excursions, and also a critical view of a rising China that in turn will broaden their global perspectives, deepen their understanding of Sino-American relationship, and make them ready to serve their country well.

For more details on the program, please feel free to contact Dr. Xu at xup@vmi.edu.

Room and Board

Students will live in a university-hotel in Southeast University at the urban center of Nanjing.  Meals at Southeast University will be at each student’s expense while meals during excursions will be covered by the program.
