Survey of the historical experiences that have shaped contemporary sub-Saharan Africa: African societies’ political, economic and cultural responses to the continent’s variegated ecological and climatic conditions; the material and cultural exchanges across the continent’s North African, Sahelian, Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean contact zones; the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the expansion of Christianity in Atlantic Africa; the expansion of Islam and Muslim reform movements.
