It considers key ways that the major paradigms of politics and sports intersect, including the use of sport for nation-building and branding, as a soft power tool for reputation- building, and as an influential feature in interstate diplomatic relations. Other issues covered include the role of sport in armed conflict, ethnic relations, democratization, women’s rights, and economic development, while specific attention will be paid to global sporting phenomena such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup. Students will engage with scientific research and historical case studies through a combination of class discussion, reading, and film presentation.
