CHI 306 - Chinese Language and Culture Through Theater

This course provides an introduction to Chinese theater from its origin to the present day. Students will learn, through study of seminal texts and video clips of performance, the basics of Chinese theater, including its musical construction, stage presentation, the virtuosity of the actor, role types, costumes, make-up, and so forth. The course is divided into two main parts. In the first part, students read and analyze the plays. In the second part of the course, students will prepare and perform a chosen play. Taught in Chinese. Prerequisite(s): CHI 302 , CHI 303 , or CHI 305 .
