Program Directors

MAJ Jeff Kendrick earned his Ph.D. in French Studies in 2012 from the University of Kansas and served as the First-Year French Language Coordinator and the Interim French Language Program Supervisor for the past several years. He enjoys teaching language, literature, and culture classes, especially in the medieval and Renaissance periods. His research interests include the poetry of Marguerite de Navarre and other contemporaries, the Reformation in France, medieval lyric poetry, and medieval chivalric romance.

MAJ Andrew Eschelbacher, a specialist in nineteenth-century European art, is currently working to transform his dissertation, “Labor in the Cauldron of Progress: Jules Dalou, the Inconstant Worker, and the Parisian Memorial Environment,” into a book-length manuscript. During the 2013-14 academic year, Andrew will be presenting papers at the annual conferences of the Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) as well as the College Art Association (CAA). His essay on the tomb of Auguste Blanqui at Père Lachaise cemetery is forthcoming as part of an edited volume on time, space, and structure. While earning his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland, Major Eschelbacher’s research was supported by a series of fellowships and grants, including the George Levitine and Jenny Rhee fellowships, as well as an American Council of Learned Societies/Mellon Foundation Dissertation Completion Fellowship.

Eligibility

Any current student in good standing with an accredited university is eligible to apply. VMI students need only submit an application. Applicants from other universities should include a faculty letter of recommendation, an official transcript, and a short essay outlining the applicant’s personal and academic goals for the program, along with the application. Applications must be received no later than 28 February 2014.

Room and Board

Students will be housed in double occupancy rooms in the Cite Universitaire, or similar student residence in Paris. Meals are not included.

General Overview

This will be a language/literature/art history program in which all participants will earn six hours of credit. The credit will count for a 300-level French class and a 300-level ERH course designated as a WX course. French majors and minors and cadets wishing to fulfill any departmental language requirement will be expected to complete the readings and assignments and a discussion section for the 300-level French course in French. Those who are not majors or minors or who do not need the language credit can complete the readings and assignments in English, but cadets doing so will not receive credit toward s a degree in French or in satisfaction of any language requirement in their department. This course will, however, fulfill 3 hours of the ERH world literature requirement. All assignments for the ERH course will be completed in English.
