Summer in Peru

The Virginia Military Institute, in partnership with Amauta Spanish School, is pleased to present a summer four-week total language and cultural immersion program in Cuzco, Peru.

Dates: June 29 - 27 July, 2014

Cost: $4,200 excluding airfare (Subject to BOV approval)

Fees include tuition, insurance, accommodation with host families, and most meals. International airfare costs are not included.

Program Director


MAJ Scott Youngdahl, who has been a member of the VMI faculty since 2008. He holds a Doctorate in Spanish from the University North Carolina. Maj. Youngdahl has lived and studied in Spain and Mexico. This will be his second year as director of the Summer Program in Central and South America.

Eligibility


Any current student in good standing with an accredited university is eligible to apply. VMI students need only submit an application. Applicants from other universities should include a faculty letter of recommendation, an official transcript, and a short essay outlining the applicant’s personal and academic goals for the program, along with the application. Applications must be received no later than 28 February 2014.

Room and Board


Students will be housed with families who speak little or no English. The home stay experience greatly enhances language acquisition and cultural understanding and is often a highlight of the program. The host family will provide three meals a day. Most residences are within easy walking distance of the school.

Gerneral Overview


During the program, students will visit the most significant Incan archaeological sites in the country, as well as complete six semester hours of Spanish at the 200 or 300 levels. Classes will be held at the Amauta Spanish School in Cuzco. Students will sign a language pledge promising to speak solely in Spanish during official activities.
