Program Director
Dr. Lunpeng Ma, Assistant Professor of Chinese, has obtained his Ph.D. from Stony Brook University (SUNY). He directed VMI’s first summer study abroad in Shanghai in 2015.
Program Description
This continuous summer program is designed for cadets who aspire to obtain the first-hand experience of mainland China, one of the oldest civilizations on earth and also a leader of global capitalism. In the 21st century, China and the US will continue to be two extremely important players in the global political, economic and international system. This program provides our cadets with an opportunity for language immersion, cultural exploration, an examination of Chinese history, exciting excursions, and also a critical view of a rising China that in turn will broaden their global perspectives, deepen their understanding of Sino-American relationship, and make them ready to serve. VMI Summer Study 2017 in Shanghai will be housed at Tongji University, Shanghai, one of the top 20 universities in China.
During their stay at Tongji, our cadets will meet six hours per day, five days a week for their 6-transfer credit language classes.
In addition to their local study and tour in Shanghai, the program will offer two weekend excursions to specific world heritage sites, Suzhou and Hangzhou, China.
Room and Board
Cadets will live in Tongji International Student Dorm equipped with shower, TV, phone, and AC.
Students need to pay for their own meals during their regular stay at Tongji. The meals during the excursion days will be covered by the program. The Program will cover the cost for the welcome banquet and the farewell dinner.
For more details on the program, please feel free to contact Dr. Ma at mal@vmi.edu.
